Gateshead (H) Thread

Looking to build upon Tuesday's highly pleasurable triumph, but it won't be easy against an unbeaten Gateshead side that remained top despite not playing in midweek, which also allowed them extra preparation for this fixture.

Have a feeling Strevens will favour Ling's security and positional awareness over Vincent at left back, but can't see any other changes to a side so impressive on Tuesday.

Will be a tough against unbeaten opposition, not sure if we will have any other players back from injury but seems unlikely.

Tough side to play against. They make the game quite tedious by keeping it amongst their back 4 for minutes on end, daring you to come and get it. It's a mental battle as much as anything else.

Wow what a game, incredible performance from everyone involved. Ten goals scored in a week it doesn't get any better than that.

Today was 4 years since Dave Simpson sadly died. He definitely had a hand in today's result.

These were Mike Jones and Mick Payne's lovely words about Dave during today's commentary. I can't thank them enough for talking about Dave with such fondness. I rang Dave's mother and told her, and will pass this on to her. RIP Dave. Never, ever forgotten.

Mike Jones : Suzanne Collier reminds me that it's Dave Simpson, who was a magnificent stalwart of this club. Dave Simpson, photographer, cake buyer, just part of Dagenham and Redbridge. It's the anniversary of his death today and Suzanne quite rightly said ‘this is his doing.’

Mick Payne: EXACTLY. What a man he was.

Mike Jones: God bless. You know, he was a top man and his death came as a massive shock to everybody involved in this club.

Mike Jones: He was a professional photographer. He worked at Spurs all the time. I'd always see him at Spurs.

Mick Payne: Loved this club. He did love this club.

Mike Jones: And he, you know, he bought things out of his own pocket for the club, etc. And he's sadly missed.

And Dave, if you're listening up there, then this is for you; this 6-1 victory.

Mick Payne: That’s a lovely statement, Michael. Lovely.

Got to be one of the strangest games I've been to. In a first half that literally saw Gateshead play keep ball for long periods we were two up! I think when we gifted them their goal most inside the ground thought we were in for a tough 2nd half. But they could not defend set pieces and lacked height at the back which we exposed time and time again. That plus them committing suicide by going for it even at 4-1 down played straight in to our hands and we counter attacked them at will and scored some brilliant goals.
So pleased for Morias who took his goals superbly and everyone could see what it meant to him and his teammates. On any other day there could have been several motm but he deserved it.
Special praise for all concerned but one which probably went unoticed was Phipps who I thought was superb in what is an unfamiliar position.
Well done lads you were brilliant and well done Ben in what has been a very good week for the club.
Superb.

Glad HP got a mention... not necessarily a guaranteed statue in any position in our best XI but solid in defence, scored some goals last year as a makeshift striker and held it down well in midfield the last couple of games.

Absolutely essential player for a squad like ours that has had injury problems recently and want blessed with huge depth last year.

I've been a vocal critic of Junior's fitness and size this season, but took both goals like a pro yesterday... honestly didn't think him and Umerah would work with one out wider than the other but that was an insane match... absolutely thought at half time we had chucked the win down the toilet!

I have been supporting the Daggers for more than 60 years and I have very rarely seen a match like that. Gateshead are a very good side and their passing football and movement make them serious contenders for promotion. Like others I thought that when they pulled one back they would go on to win the game such was their dominance on the ball. I still cannot believe what I witnessed. Our work rate, determination and finishing was superb. The defence was magnificent. The midfield worked their socks off. I am especially pleased for Umerah and Morias they chased lost causes, harried defenders and got the goals they deserved. And of course Rees and Pereira - wonderful.

What a incredible day, we will be talking about it for ages! It seemed every time we went on the attack our boys would score, how many times we said between ourselves we take leads and fold back, mostly lose and not getting that extra goal so it seems Bens motivated them to at last see that out. Stupid thing is although there was only going to be one winner the Heed could quite easily have scored a high tally too. Thought that brilliant Harry Phipps tackle right in front of goal second half was out there top notch, must see that again. Not often we come away seeing our boys totally slaughter a team and every goal was total class especially the two of Junior, we just gotta keep this going now, Well done lads proud of you!

Cannot quite process what went on yesterday. Gateshead started the day as unbeaten league leaders while having played a game fewer. We've annihilated them 7-1! In half an hour, going from hoping we could hang on, to our joint-biggest win in over a decade. Those are the days to savour. What a week for the club. Wow

That. Was. Incredible.

What a great week. Every player has turned up and made themselves count this week. Fantastic saves, fantastic tackles, fantastic goals. Absolutely demolished two teams expected to be up there and I couldn’t be happier for the boys and Strevs.

Honestly nothing more needs to be said. Just so happy to have witnessed that.

I agree with NBDag, nothing more needs to be said. Although I will say one thing  That performance would not have happened with Hessenthaler in the team.
