We only sing when we're losing...

Since our upturn in performances and form I've noticed (as have many i imagine) that the level of noise and support from the crowd hasn't risen back to what it was even when we were struggling.

It seems weird because i expected as the results started to pick up we would slowly see the confidence of the home faithful start to rise.
It seems attendances are indeed down ( i haven't had to walk round the back of the Sieve to get into the middle all season) but i don't feel we can really put it down to this as in the past few seasons I've found games where attendances were down (and we were left with mainly regulars) the atmosphere would actually pick up.

The lack of a more permanent drummer is also a contributing factor. Now i know people like to say "we shouldn't need a drummer" but put simply it's what we're used to. not everyone has the confidence (or indeed the lung power) to start a song and the drum serves as an anchor for everyone to launch from. The first bar or so of a beat would help everyone know where we're going and some songs and chants we never hear without the drum (eg. clap, clap, clap clap clap, clap clap clap clap "DAGGNUHM!") I Understand that in the past our past drummers have been a bit discouraged because of comments on forums and FB etc about "that f*cking drum" and people moaning about it being played all match. Well to them i say, is it better without the drummer? being able to hear the background hum of conversation for most of the match?

And you knew i was gonna bring it up, but the TB Stand. eugghhhhhhh. You know, I've come to hate that thing. This imposing monolith of away fans shouting their incomprehensible noise at us. I miss our old away end, the away team would score, and yes, you could hear them. but they were all the way over there, shouting into an open sky, their songs blown away on the Essex/London wind.
Also the TB combo tickets may be contributing to the lack of noise. After all the back and forth over the TB and home fans getting to use it i think by the time the club came up with the Combo ticket a lot of the people re now sick of the thing. A portion of our fans now splitting off to the TB stand every few games may also not be helping. I don't know if much singing happens in the TB end on combo days but i don't really hear it from our fans and I wonder if there are vocal fans who cast themselves adrift in there.

Those who know me know I'm always up for a sing song and start a few chants myself, others are too and it isnt exactly silent. I also know that our away support has been pretty damn good. Even so i cant help but think that now the boys on the pitch have raised their game maybe it's our turn, 'cause i swear we used to be louder than this.

or am i just looking back on the past with rose tinted goggles?

It's all Arkwrights fault. He was the life and soul of the singing and drumming but since he's taken a back seat the atmosphere has gone to pot.

When we get the stand full time is when the chanting may re-appear.I agree, having a TB Combo ST is detrimental to atmosphere but I do like the view, facilities and comfort.I do like a sing song and even started a few away at Northampton and Southend but cant say Ive really heard much noise at home this season.Plus...we only got 1 song really.Stick the drum in the TB stand along with a few of the usual suspects and you'll definitely get noise. Its a catch 22 though as I realise there are those that want to stand in the same old place rather than view from the TB.

The atmosphere during the Garry Hill era was by far the best I've ever known.

Although a bit of a numpty, Will and his trumpet + Danny on the drum helped get everyone in the mood for every single game.

Be great to return to those days!

Why doesn't the trumpeter come anymore?

Giving the drum to an out of tune teenager, more interested in being a 'lad' and watching NFL, was never going to create much noise.

I have more fun watching the Daggers via SSN than I do in the ground.

Why not? Fleetwood and Accrington do it and seems to have improved their atmosphere.
