what is putting me off though, is I want to pay the 37.99 in one go now, but got some direct debit mandate come up, which puts me off as perhaps they take a certain amount out monthly? don't want that...nothing is ever simple ay.

The whole thing is direct debit be it monthly or yearly. Just cancel the dd as soon as they take the cash. It is to catch people out who forget to cancel.
